Nyingchi · Tibet · On-road · Spring peach blossom
A spring loop through Nyingchi’s hundred-mile peach blossom to Motuo, Tibet’s hidden “lotus land” - over Sejila Pass, along the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, beneath Namcha Barwa. Six days, all paved.
The ride
Every spring, the valleys of Nyingchi fill with wild peach blossom beneath the snow wall of Namcha Barwa (7,782 m). This loop rides through the heart of it - and pushes on to Motuo, the last county in China to get a road, long known as the hidden “lotus land” of Tibetan legend.
You cross the finest stretch of the G318 over Sejila Pass at 4,720 m, drop through the Lulang forests, and follow the Zhamo road down from snow peaks to near-rainforest - four seasons in a single day. Along the way: the Guoguotang great bend, the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, the Buddha-palm dunes at Danniang, and a sunrise on Namcha Barwa that Tibetans say brings a year of luck.
Run as a private ride with a local travel guide, a road captain, a mechanic, and a support 4×4. This is a spring-only route - the blossom window is short.
The route tops out at Sejila Pass, 4,720 m, then plunges to Motuo at just 1,100 m - the biggest single descent in Tibet, snow to near-rainforest in a day.
